Everything you need to know about Flow
Find the answers you need to start with Flow and breastfeed with confidence.
- Prepare: Wash hands and separate components. Use two bowls—one with soapy water and one with clean water.
- Cleaning the Shield: Fill the syringe with soapy water, inject it into the nipple, and press gently for suction. You’ll see the soapy water flow through the built-in channel. Rinse with clean water until no soap remains in the channel. Remove excess water with air from the syringe.
- Dry and Store: Let the syringe and shield dry on a clean surface. Once dry, store the shield in the closed storage case to keep it dust-free.
Cleaning Other Parts:
Wash the syringe parts and case in warm soapy water, let them dry, then reassemble and store in the case.
- Disinfect Flow before first use and at least once daily.
- Microwave Method:
- Clean the shield using the ‘How to Clean’ video instructions.
- Add 15ml of drinking-quality water into the case (up to the fill line).
- Place the shield inside the case, close the lid, and microwave according to the wattage guidelines.
- Allow the case to cool for 10 minutes before handling.
- Drain water through the case openings by the hinge.
- Use the syringe to push air through the shield’s channel to remove excess water.
- Boiling Method:
- Clean the shield using the ‘How to Clean’ video instructions.
- Fill a pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil.
- Continue to boil for 2 minutes to ensure water reaches the optimum temperature.
- Carefully submerge the shield in the boiling water for 5 minutes, ensuring it doesn’t touch the pot’s sides or bottom.
- Remove the shield and let it cool for 10 minutes.
- Use the syringe to push air through the shield’s tube to remove any leftover water. Repeat if needed.
NOTE: Always handle hot water and steam with care to avoid burns!
- Drying: Place the shield on a clean surface to dry, then store it in its case to avoid collecting dust.
- Place the nipple shield over the center of your nipple with the milk channel facing upward for optimal visibility during breastfeeding.
- Once your baby latches, the channel should rest between the baby’s lips.
- Allow a few minutes for your first letdown to occur.
- The design enables moms to observe the milk flow rate, the color of breast milk, and their baby’s feeding patterns.
- Get Comfortable: Make yourself comfortable by using a pillow to support your neck and body to help you stay relaxed and free from discomfort.
- Positioning:
- Hold your baby tummy-to-mommy, with their body flat against yours.
- Ensure their ears, shoulders, and hips are in a straight line.
- Encourage a Good Latch:
- Gently position your baby so their nose lightly touches your nipple.
- Wait for them to open their mouth wide, like a yawn, and guide them to latch onto your nipple.
- Make sure your nipple points toward the top of their mouth, with their mouth covering both the nipple and a good portion of the areola.
- Check the Latch:
- Ensure both lips are flipped outward (though this may vary).
- Their chin should touch your breast, with their nose lightly resting against it.
- Observe Feeding:
- Look for rhythmic sucking and listen for swallowing sounds.
- It’s normal for your baby to pause or change speed during nursing.
- Adjust if Necessary:
- If it’s not going well, let your baby take a breath and try again.
- Be Patient: Breastfeeding is a skill that you and your baby are learning together. If you need a little extra help, don’t hesitate to reach out to a lactation consultant for support.
Yes, air bubbles in the Flow channel are completely normal. They occur naturally as milk flows from you to your baby when your baby applies pressure during nursing. This is simply part of the feeding process and nothing to worry about.
Don’t worry! Give yourself time and try not to panic. It’s completely normal for let down to take a couple of minutes after your baby latches. Allow the process to happen naturally. If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out to our Munchkin Customer Service team for support.
